On September 16, Oculus announced the Quest 2 at Facebook Connect, a fully wireless VR headset packing more power than the Rift. While the Rift required a high-end gaming PC, the Quest 2 outperforms it in a standalone, wireless package that comes with redesigned controllers, 6GB of memory, and a powerful Snapdragon XR2 Platform processor.
The Oculus Quest 2 is the next phase in their new strategy to make VR mainstream, it accomplishes 2 key goals: 1) reduce friction by enabling powerful performance without a PC, and 2) offer VR at a price accessible to everyone. At $299, the Quest 2 is priced the same as the upcoming Xbox Series S and cheaper than the expected price of the Digital-only PS5. It’s notable that Oculus is going all-in on wireless, abandoning the PC-linked Rift altogether.
Available now for pre-order, the Quest 2 ships October 13.
